The Olympic Rings
The Tokyo 2020 Olympics finally starts after postponing for a year due to the pandemic. I realise that I do not know the meaning of the Olympic rings so I made a quick search on the internet. I thought each colour represents an element/value of the Olympic game, such as courage, braveness, respect etc.
The answer was simple:
“The Olympic symbol expresses the activity of the Olympic Movement and represents the union of the five continents and the meeting of athletes from throughout the world at the Olympic Games.” (Olympic Charter, Rule 8)
The rings were designed by Pierre de Coubertin in 1913. He is a French historian and the founder of the Olympic Movement. The goal of the Olympic Movement is to contribute to building a peaceful and better world, by educating youth through sport practised without discrimination of any kind and mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play. It brings the world's athletes together at the sports festivals. Olympism is a philosophy of life, exalting and combining in a balanced quality of the body, will and mind. It seeks to create a way of life-based on the joy found in effort, the educational value of good examples and respect for universal fundamental ethical principles.
